Nelloptodes gretae,

Nelloptodes gretae: Tiny beetle named after climate activist Greta Thunberg

Scientists at the British Natural History Museum in London, UK have officially named a tiny species of beetle that was discovered more than 50 years ago as ‘Nelloptodes gretae’, to honour the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist’s ‘outstanding contribution’ in raising global awareness of climate change.

About Nelloptodes gretae

It is an arthropod, which has no eyes or wings and rather has a small pit between where the eyes should have been. It is a tiny species of beetle, pale yellow and gold, with less than 1mm long. It belongs to Ptiliidae family, which is made up of some of the world’s smallest beetles.
The beetle was first found in 1965 by British naturalist Dr William C Block in Nairobi, Kenya. The samples taken in Kenya are stored in British Natural History Museum.
In general the biological name comprise of two words- one for genus and second for species i.e. while the species name ‘gretae’ derives from Greta, the genus Nelloptodes too is a new genus. Traditionally, it is the species name that scientists coin to honour a prominent personality, and sometimes even a friend/ relative.

India, Bhutan, Nepal: Trans Border Conservation Park

A Memorandum of Understanding has been drafted by India, Nepal and Bhutan to create a trans-boundary wildlife conservation park. The park will include bio-diversity rich landscapes

Significance

Unlike other parks that are species oriented, this peace park will be landscape oriented. Such a kind already exists in Manas park region. However, only a part of the trans-boundary protected area in India and Bhutan is being conserved based on the landscape. In the new peace park, the entire park will have its conservation protocols completely based on landscape.

About the park

  • The park will be an extension of the Manas park
  • The initiative was started by India keeping in view the migratory wildlife species in the region, especially elephants.

Manas National Park

  • Manas National Park is a UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, Project tiger reserve and a biosphere reserve.
  • The park is contiguous with the Royal Manas National Park of Bhutan.
  • It is home to many endangered species like Assam roofed turtle, golden Langur, hispid hare, pygmy hog.
  • The park is famous for its wild water buffaloes
  • It is located on the Manas river, a major tributary of Brahmaputra
